Predictions Format Study Group Charter

Several situations have converged to require development of consolidated prediction formats and procedures for a variety of laser ranging targets. These motivators include:

  • the need to formalize the lunar prediction formats and software for possible new lunar ranging stations;
  • the anticipated launch of laser transponders that would land on the lunar surface or orbit about the moon;
  • the ongoing technology development for transponders to be deployed on the Martian surface and other solar system bodies; and
  • the potential inadequacy of the current artificial satellite prediction format (tiv) to handle the accuracy required for ranging very low earth satellites and its inability to accommodate the above new requirements.

The purpose of this study group is to pursue the following:

  • Assess and consolidate the requirements for a general prediction format or formats to encompass artificial earth satellites, reflectors or transponders on or in orbit about solar system bodies such as the moon, Mars, and asteroids, as well as in transit to these locations.
  • Develop a format or formats to meet these requirements.
  • Outline procedures for distribution of these predictions, including identifying real or potential sources of the predictions.
  • Assess the requirements for new or modified on-site software to turn distributed predictions into appropriate point angles and ranges.
  • Identify current software that can be modified to fulfill requirement 4.
  • Prepare a formal recommendation to the ILRS regarding the new formats and procedures.
