CHAMPCenter of Mass Information:More information on laser ranging and center of mass analysis for CHAMP can be found in the paper 'The Retro-Reflector for the CHAMP Satellite: Final Design and Realization' presented in 1998 at the International Laser Ranging Workshop in Deggendorf, Germany. Comments about this paper from G. Appleby: "Part of the paper details the corrections required to refer laser range measurements to the center of mass (CoM) of the satellite. At a level of precision of about 10mm this correction can be computed in two parts, both of which should be added to the range measurement. A correction of 5mm refers the measurement to the phase center of the RRA, which itself is situated 250mm along the vector pointing from the satellite CoM to the instantaneous nadir of the satellite. The component of this 250mm offset, resolved into the direction of the incident laser pulse, forms the second part of the CoM correction. The paper should be consulted if mm-level precision in the value of the CoM correction is required." |
