Experimental/Special MissionsThe experimental satellites carry special experiments that do not fit into one of the other mission classifications (i.e. geodetic, earth sensing, positioning). These satellites are irregularly shaped objects in usually relatively low altitude orbits. Because of this, these satellites are subject to drag and solar radiation forces which are considerable and to some degree unpredictable. The experiments on these missions are very diverse. For instance, lunar laser ranging is used to determine lunar dynamics and lunar structure. Satellite laser ranging to TiPS was used in tether physics research. Gravity Probe B will be used to test two predictions of general relativity. In most cases, satellite laser ranging is used for precision orbit determination.
